Lesson 6: Hamza Variants

When the letter Alif in the Arabic alphabet is vowelized, it is called Hamza. According to their appearance in a word, there are four types of Hamza:

  • Hamza-Alif: [إ] ⠌ (dots 3,4)

  • Waw-Hamza: [ؤ] ⠳ (dots 1,2,5,6)

  • Ya-Hamza: [ئ] ⠽ (dots 1,3,4,5,6) and

  • Hamza: [ء] ⠄ (dot 3)

are represented as such. All are pronounced as ’e’, ‘i’, or ‘u’ according to their vowels. NOTE: In Arabic, the Hamza is written above or below the Alif depending on the situation. For easier reading, this distinction is not made in the Braille alphabet and is written as indicated above.
